The Story of Our Name & Why We Use The Goen Coin
In Japan the five yen coin is called “goen”. It is written as 五円 and is the only Japanese coin without Western numerals. It is considered a good luck piece as well. When put in the back of a cash register or in a wallet given as a gift, it means good luck with money.
However the phonetically similar 御縁 (goen) is taken to mean good luck in relationships and is often exchanged between friends. It is also often dropped into the offering/donation boxes at Japanese temples and shrines for good luck with the local deities. It is this meaning from which we take the name “goenKendama” and was also the name of our ramen shop in the Philippines, “go-en: The Japanese Ramen Shoppe.”
We use the goen coin for our kendama holders, KenToggle & KenToggle Junior, so you always have some luck with you and it coincidentally works as a great “toggle” button in our designs. One added benefit is that when struck just right it has a nice ringing tone to it.
